Zanclus cornutus, also known as The Moorish Idol, shows an incredibly beautiful colour pattern made up of vertical black, white and yellow stripes, and they can grow up to 18 cm in length.
Moorish Idols should be added to aquariums with plenty of rockwork for grazing and hiding. Tank size should be considered before purchasing as Moorish Idols need plenty of open swim room. Moorish Idols can be difficult to maintain in a home aquarium. Moorish Idols are voracious eaters and feed on sponge, coral polyps, coralline algae, tunicates and other benthic invertebrates. Provide a varied diet of marine meaty and algae-based foods multiple times daily. If experiencing refusal to eat try adding a rock rich in coralline algae or sponge. Moorish Idols mate for life and should be housed with other peaceful tank mates.
